January 2016 Sports Book News

The look-ahead line for Super Bowl 50 varied from NFC PK to NFC -3 in the weeks leading up to Championship week. Once the Panthers and Broncos made it, the line opened offshore with CAR -3.5 +102 at Pinnacle and then a short time later CRIS posted a line of CAR -4.

In Las Vegas, CGT opened the game Car -3.5 while both William Hill and the Wynn chose to start with -4. On the money line the price opened fairly uniform in the -170 to -180 range. The one outlier after early betting was at the Coast properties who opened it -185 but have since moved to -210 on action. As of Monday morning they offered a statewide best of +175 on the Den side. The expectation here is for the game to settle at Panthers -5 and -200 on the money line.

The total opened 45, which is a few points lower than the look-ahead lines had. Most places offering an advance total had it in the 48-49 range. The Broncos making it was the difference there as they are the lowest scoring team among the final four and statistically the best defensive unit. The total is at 45 just about everywhere as of Monday morning with the lone exception being Treasure Island who stands at 46.

The biggest development on the 2016 sports book scene so far is definitely the launch of the Westgate mobile betting app. Using the same platform as Coast, Aliante and Atlantis, the Westgate app is an easy sign-up and deposit and offers virtually all the content available at the window. It’s a game changer for bigger bettors who find most of the mobile betting available to this point too restrictive and with limits well below what they get at the counter. This is not exactly going out on a limb but the prediction here is for a record shattering handle on Super Bowl props this year with Westgate mobile betting being the primary factor. Kudos to the Westgate sports book, Richie B and the rest of the Miomni Gaming folks for improving Las Vegas sports betting by a measurable degree.

The rough target date for launch is sometime mid-February. Wynn is one of the better books in the state for finding different numbers. The concern when any book goes mobile is that the lines will become more uniform with the market consensus. It will be interesting to see how the Wynn lines are affected, if at all. Rumor is the limits will not be close to what you can get at the counter and that actually may be the right compromise. Most would rather have a good number for $500 than a vanilla line with higher limits. The Wynn will be the 10th book to offer mobile betting. They would be the 11th except for the Treasure Island bowing out in November.

TREASURE ISLAND: It was a big surprise when Treasure Island pulled the plug on mobile betting last month. The time, effort and money to get things rolling would seem to be significant and the future of Nevada sports betting is certainly heading full steam in that direction. Citing a lower hold percentage on mobile bets though, upper management decided it just wasn’t for them and stopped taking bets on Dec 14th. All those who have future bets are encouraged to wait until those wagers clear before withdrawing their balance. You can still log on to your account to check bets and your balance. TI is the first Nevada book to bail on mobile betting and the projection is they will be the last for quite some time.

SUPERCONTEST: The entry of “Rounding Again” took down the $906,675 first place prize, besting a record field of 1,727 entries in the Westgate SuperContest. His alias came from a line in the movie Rounders and Dave Tuley of ViewFromVegas caught up with him after the win to get his thoughts on the the big score. SuperContest Winner

It came down to the second tie-breaker in the Finals of the Friday Football Showdown where Jonathon Rice prevailed over the LVA team of Anthony Curtis and Frank Betti. Both notched 4.5 pts out of a possible 8 and both won their Best Bets, which was the first tie-breaker. Rice took it down on the next tie-breaker when he won SD St +1 while the Jets +3 pushed for the LVA team. First place took home 120K+ when it was all said and done and second place got 40K+. Next year the expectation is for the $2000 entry fee contest to draw well over 100 entrants.

This year the goal is the same as last year. Visit every book in the state that will offer a bet, prop and parlay card and get it up on the Super Bowl 50 area of LVA for reference. Any promotions, parties and special offers pertaining to the Super Bowl will go up as well. The prop lines and parlay cards from all the Nevada sports books will be accessible from the LVAS Super Bowl 50 page. The viewing parties and promotions will appear throughout the LVA site with much of what pops up appearing first in Today’s News on the LVA home page.

For those wanting a preview of what to expect in the way of Super Bowl props we’ve re-posted the entire list of Westgate’s from last year’s Super Bowl XLIX.

It happens every year. People love to follow the exploits of big bettors and hear tales of big wins. In recent years the posting (as selective as they may be) of big bets and big wins by Floyd Mayweather and “D” casino owner Derek Stevens have been fun local fodder for the local and national media. Longshot hits on the safety bets have also been popular as many of those paid 50/1 and up. This year will be no different and it’s just a matter of time before they start popping up. It all started many years ago as flamboyant casino owners would bet for publicity and profit. When Vegas World owner Bob Stupak made the first publicly documented million dollar bet at his pal Gene Mayday’s Little Caesars Sports Book, it made national news. We’ll post the big tickets and subsequent big winners when they are found. Until then, here’s the one that started it all.
